Torqeedo are now the worldwide market leaders in electric outboard engine technology. We here at Pennine Marine (in the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales) think that Torqeedo have now started a revolution (from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps).
 
With their very high-flying, environmentally-friendly credentials - Torqeedo - that very thorough, very professional and very intelligent German marine engineering company - have now developed a simply staggering range of large electric outboard engines – the Deep Blue.
 
The two Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engines are specifically designed for the 40hp and 80hp outboard engine market sector - therefore they are the first electric outboards capable of powering heavy boats at high speeds.

The Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine rightly won a prize at the Metz Boat Show for being one of the most innovative new boating products.
 
We here at Pennine Marine installed some of the earliest Torqeedo electric outboard engines. These were usually for certain specialist applications where petrol outboards were not appropriate, so often for environmental reasons (on ecologically sensitive and hence protected waterways) we were installing electric and pollution free outboard engines. However, just in the last few years since we started doing this, the rate of change of Torqeedo’s product development has been astonishing.
 
In recent years, the two much smaller relations of the Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard - the Torqeedo Travel 1003S and Torqeedo Cruise ranges - have now firmly established themselves as a popular, lightweight, clean and reliable electric outboard engines (in the 3hp to 20hp outboard engine sector). The expanding use of the ever popular Torqeedo Travel 1003S electric outboards has really help to improve boater’s confidence in the effective distance and range that these electric outboard engines will achieve. We think the success of Torqeedo’s smaller models in the practical, everyday boating market has really helped to power interest (excuse the pun) in their larger electric outboard engine models.

You can only have remote steering Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine ptions. However with the remote steering Torqeedo Deep Blue engine, they have a separate small throttle controller, which would normally be mounted alongside the steering wheel at the helmsman (or – this being the 21st century) helmswoman’s position. This controls the power output of the Torqeedo Cruise engine and there is the superb computer screen to show you range, distance, speed and charge status etc.
 
With all the Torqeedo throttle controlled Deep Blue electric outboard engines, all the electric motor controls are fully integrated on the remote controller. These Torqeedo Deep Blue engine controls are an extremely neat and intuitive system to use, that is very ergonomic and user friendly.
 
Please note that on the remote steering models, all the outboard engine steering gear is similar to a conventional petrol engine, being cable operated with a remote steering wheel on the console (please note that the steering system is sold separately).

Torqeedo only recommend their well-proven battery pack, the Torqeedo Deep Blue unit, for powering their Deep Blue electric outboard engines. This is the most expensive part of the package.
 
This Torqeedo battery pack is an extremely powerful unit, which is densely packed with lithium ion cells, thus being a superb example of modern 21st century battery technology. This Torqeedo battery is the recommended battery unit.
 
This Torqeedo battery is always fully connected and built into the boat. It is also highly intelligent, with the Torqeedo Battery Management System (BMS) feeding information to the Torqeedo Deep Blue motors and throttle controller.
 
However the Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engines could possibly be connected to a set of conventional batteries. Using conventional batteries might be more economical and cost effective than the using the Torqeedo batteries for certain applications. Please contact Pennine Marine for specialist advice if you want to consider using a different battery configuration on a Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine.

On a conventional small day motorboat up to 3 tons, at a slow speed of 4 knots Torqeedo Deep Blue with two batteries electric outboard engine will have a range of 21 to 60 nautical miles and will have a running time of 5 to 16 hours.
 
At full throttle, Deep Blue engine speeds increases to 20 to 30 knots, however the range on the Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard will drop to 10 to 15 nautical miles and a run time of 30 minutes. These ranges, charges and distances remaining are all shown on the Torqeedo digital read out on the controller, so allowing you to know exactly which range you have left.

With the single unit on smallest 40hp Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine, just one Torqeedo battery is required. These single Torqeedo battery packs will have their own chargers permanently connected to the motors thus then allowing the entire Torqeedo Deep Blue configuration to be quickly charged whilst on the boat.
 
However for the larger Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine installations – those with multiple batteries - will be connected together with heavy duty cabling and they need additional chargers. This means that these larger Torqeedo electric outboard engine installations are permanently fixed on the boat. These larger installations of Torqeedo Deep Blue electric outboard engine, especially those with remote steering, will always be fixed installations that always remain on board the boat. Therefore you need to consider how and where to charge the batteries.

Let us start by saying that all Torqeedo products are high-quality premium products (and like electric sports cars and clean power stations) designing advanced 21st Century technology which protects the Earth’s natural environment and at the same time still performs with the power necessary to drive a big boat along, this advanced technology does come at a price. Also we have to note that The Torqeedo Deep Blue system is clearly aimed straight at the top end of the boating market (so to copy the phase used by the snobbish shop assistant speaking down to Julia Roberts in the film Pretty Woman twenty years ago – “is madam talking about spending obscene or seriously obscene amounts of money in this shop today”).
