TORQEEDO ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINES - AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TORQEEDO RANGE OF OUTBOARDS

The latest Torqeedo electric outboard engines for sale at Pennine Marine are a very innovative German-made range of electric outboard engines. Frankly the Torqeedo range is easily the best quality electric outboard engine range now sold in the UK.

The Torqeedo electric outboards now for sale are, quite simply, in a different league division to the old-fashioned trolling electric outboard engines. Therefore the Torqeedo's cannot be directly compared with these other makes of electric outboards.

Small trolling electric outboard engines have been sold for years and are seen on the sterns of fishing dinghy’s and larger canoes. Whilst new Torqeedo electric outboard engines can easily be used as a trolling outboard engines (for use on inflatable boats, dinghy’s, small ribs and workboats) in practice they are proper outboard engines.

There are now definitely two distinct classes of electric outboard engines for sale in th UK - the trolling motors that are available from several manufacturers and - in a league of one right out on its own - the Torqeedo outboard engine range.

TORQEEDO OUTBOARD ENGINES IN THE BOATING MEDIA

What the mainstream marine press and media - who are based down in the backwater of the Solent - are only now just beginning to realise is what we have known about for a while. The Torqeedo range being sold in the UK is already a top-quality mainstream outboard engine brand, one which directly challenges the best of the petrol-driven outboard engines.

We have known this for a long while at Pennine Marine – which is why we took on the Torqeeedo dealership here, for all of “Up North”.

For an example of what the Solent based boating press say, please see Motor Boat Monthly Jan 2013 LBS edition. MBM tested seven small outboard engines. We can summarise their article for you as - we think they have only just found out about the Torqeedo, we know they got a few technical things wrong and their article was frankly a little bit dozy (however what else do you expect from members of the Southampton Municipal Boating Lake Yacht Club?).

However as Motor Boating Monthly said themselves in their conclusion, after testing the seven small outboards from all the different leading outboard manufacturers, their own words about the Torqeedo Travel 1003 were;

“the biggest surprise was the Torqeedo, which we absolutely loved for its ease of use, portability and very quiet running…... (it)……proves that electric outboards can be a viable alternative”.

OK, so we don’t often agree with everything Motor Boat Monthly say. However on this occasion, when they were talking about the Torqeedo Travel 1003, these soft southern journalists got it absolutely spot on with their conclusions about the Torqeedo.

THE TORQEEDO ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE COMPANY IN GERMANY

The Torqeedo electric outboard range has now been developed to the point where the Travel 1003 electric outboards for sale at Pennine Marine are now directly comparable with conventional 4hp petrol outboard engines from any of the major outboard engine manufacturers. The other models in the Torqeedo range are still a bit less mainstream, however if Torqeedo have a product in the size and power range you are considering, then they are worth a look.

The Torqeedo outboard engine build quality is right up there with the well-known and best outboard engine brand names such as Suzuki and Yamaha. Therefore the Torqeedo electric outboard is in the premier division of outboard engine engineering.

We know the German design team behind the Torqeedo electric outboard engines. They have been steadily and quietly developing their various product ranges of these silent electric outboard engines over the last decade, so that the products now on sale with us have a good track record. We know the work that goes on behind the scenes at Torqeedo. Their facilities are impressive, as is the staff's tectonic efficiency and in particular their dedication to looking at the tiniest of technical details, all to give their products a great all-round design and build quality.

The Torqeedo' now on sale in the UK have a design and build quality that is second to none in the outboard marketplace. This quality puts them right-up alongside the best of all the other mainstream outboard engine manufacturer's that are found on the UK marine market.

TORQEEDO COMPARED TO OTHER OUTBOARD ENGINES

We have been selling Torqeedo's alongside both Yamaha and Suzuki outboard's for quite a long time now. Quite frankly we are giving our customers who are looking for a small outboard engine too much choice. The Torqeedo’s design and build quality is that good that customers really struggle to decide between buying a Yamaha, a Suzuki or a Torqeedo outboard!

The other give-away about the desirability of the Torqeedo range is that absolutely everybody who comes into our showroom wants us to demonstrate our showroom model to them. The Travel 1003 model that sits in the middle of our showroom gets a lot of use, simply showing our customers what the future is all about.

To conclude, the Torqeedo electric outboards being sold here at Pennine Marine is definitely now the only electric outboard engine which is a competitor for the mainstream petrol outboard engine market. We at Pennine Marine think that these Torqeedo electric outboards are now a serious - but silent - rival to the smallest traditional petrol outboards in the 2.5hp to 4hp outboard engine class.

TORQEEDO OUTBOARDS ENGINE ON DISPLAY IN OUR SKIPTON SHOWROOM

A complete and working example of the Torqeedo Travel 1003 is always here. This impressive piece of silent German electric engineering and technology is now on display here in our Skipton showroom and can be used by potential Torqeedo customers.

We can demonstrate the Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard to you, including its amazing ability to split down into three pieces that are so light that even your young kids could lift your new Torqeedo engine (assuming they are not still having a lie in!).

We can even run this electric outboard for you in the showroom, so that you can hear for yourself just how "loud" the Torqeedo really is in practice and in action at full power. I don’t need to raise my voice when the Torqeedo is running – and that is with the prop out of the water! Yes, they really are that quiet.

Our showroom with the Torqeedo Travel electric outboard engine on display is open six days, however we are closed Sundays.

TORQEEDO IS THE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY OUTBOARD ON THE PLANET

Last and by no means least - we live next door to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so we know a bit about caring for the environment and talking green talk. The Torqeedo's we have for sale here are, quite simply, the most environmentally friendly outboard engine brand on the planet.

The environmental advantages with the Torqeedo are;
There is no use of hydrocarbon fuels
There are no petrol-chemical lubricants required
There is no oil or petrol to leak into the water
The noise is minimal
There are no polluting exhaust emissions

Therefore you can combined your boating with care for the natural marine environment.

The Torqeedo outboard is so clean it is even allowed on Yorkshire Water's most sensitive reserviors, where the only competition is man-powered oars (because all petrol driven outboard engines are banned from their most sensitive reserviors, simply because of the pollution risk).

THE 2013 TORQEEDO ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE RANGE

The 2013 Torqeedo outboard engine range for sale at Pennine Marine consists of three basic model types;

TORQEEDO TRAVEL OUTBOARD MODELS

The Travel series are highly portable electric outboards for use on tenders, dinghies and small day-sailor’s.

TORQEEDO CRUISE OUTBOARD MODELS

The Torqeedo Cruise series are electric outboard engines. These have separate inboard batteries. They are designed for motorboats and yachts up to 4 Tons

TORQEEDO ULTRALIGHT MODELS

An electric trolling motor for kayaks, canoes and only very small boats.

TORQEEDO DEEP BLUE

An electric outboard system for ribs and powerboats of 80hp - believe it or not! Torqeedo Deep Blue features high power and ferocious acceleration. New out in early 2013. Please call us for details of the Torqeedo Deep Blue system, as these engines are not posted on this website.

THE TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003 ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE

Our customer’s favourite in 2012 out of all the Torqeedo range was the Torqeedo Travel 1003. This was easily the best selling outboard engine model here in 2012. It even beat the best selling Japanses brands on total sales in the "up to 4hp" outboard engine catagory.

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard for sale here at Pennine Marine is the direct equivalent of a small conventional petrol outboard engine (say a Yamaha or Suzuki 4hp outboard), with a rating of 3 to 4hp capacity/ power output at the outboards propeller.

Whilst the nominal horsepower of a Travel 1003 is slightly under the total power of a 4hp outboard, the high trust propeller and low engine weight make up the difference. On the back of a boat, it behaves as a 4hp outbaord would do.

The lithium-ion battery on the Torqeedo electric outboard engine has now been developed to the point where the Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard model has sufficient range that it will equal the boating range of many equivalent petrol engines with their small 1 litre inboard tanks.

The Travel 1003 outboard engine clamps onto the small boat’s transom in the normal way. There are two threaded bolts, with very nice orange levers (that you can actually see in the dark).

The Torqeedo battery is the entire top half of the Travel 1003 engine, with the engine’s carrying handle integrated into the battery. The whole battery lifts off, leaving just the tiller and the main vertical drive shaft. The battery is secured by a set of lugs and a large pin. Wjhat surprises many new customers is that there is no separate battery needed on the Travel 1003 – what you see in the photo is the complete outboard engine unit, with the battery already fitted on it.

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 tiller controls are fairly standard. However the Torqeedo's tiller design is very “clean” and is therefore very simple to use. The tiller on the Travel 1003 is very ergonomic and therefore occasional boat users, especially some nervous women and children, find it very simple and intuitive to use the Torqeedo's tiller controls.

With the Torqeedo tiller being positioned in the middle of the engine, the Torqeedo Travel 1003 is equally easy to use no matter what side of the boat the helmsman is sitting on. This is a definite advantage over traditional outboards, where the tiller handle will be offset to one side.

On the top of the tiller on the Torqeedo Travel 1003 is a nifty digital readout, which links with the integrated GPS system to tell you you’re speed, remaining range and even remaining battery charge. This is so sensitive that if you accelerate hard the remaining range drops down quite markedly, the readout changing within seconds.

One feature of the Travel 1003 which is really easy to miss when you look at it is reverse gear. To go backwards, all you do is turn the tiller throttle control in the opposite direction (after locking it)- thus giving you the ability to go backwards with a Torqeedo at full speed.

The kill switch on the Travel 1003 is simplicity itself. A magnetic disc fob, which sticks on the top of the tiller, all secured by a short lanyard to your wrist.

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard engine can be charged from a variety of sources. Normally it would be charged off the mains, however an on-board marine generator or even a solar panel are all capable of being used to charge the Travel 1003. If required, the battery can be completely removed and stored or charged separately from the main body/shaft of the Torqeedo.

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard engine is sold with all necessary parts and in the sale price it comes complete with a full removable integrated battery pack, battery charger and adaptor plug.

TORQEEDO'S FEATHERWEIGHT 4HP ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE

The Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard is incredibly lightweight. At just 13.4kg it is approximately half (yes, we did get that right - half!) the weight of the best-in-class 4hp petrol outboard engine, the Suzuki DF4.

As you will see and feel for yourself, the Torqeedo electric outboard looks and feels radically different to the conventional outboard engines. The Torqeedo outboard is a very modern, very clean and very neat piece of outboard engine design. The Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard engine is also an incredibly lightweight outboard. It's lightweight and cleanilness therefore make it very portable.

We at Pennine Marine know all about this, as we have the Yamaha F4, the Suzuki DF4 outboard and the Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard engines all side-by-side and for sale here in the Skipton showroom. Therefore if you do not believe us when reading this about the lightweight of the Torqeedo outboard, then please come and see (and lift) the Torqeedo electric outboard engine for yourself.

The Suzuki DF4 outboard engine weighs in at 25kg, other petrol engines in the 4hp outboard engine class weight in at about 30kg. Therefore the Torqeedo electric outboard at all up "as sold" at just 15kg is incredibly lightweight, at just half the weight of its nearest competitors.

The Torqeedo electric outboard engine can therefore easily be lifted by teenagers, women and grandparents.

This lightweight and therefore portability feature makes the Torqeedo electric outboard engine ideal for several categories of small boat users. It is very suitable if you have to carry your outboard a long way, or the main boat's stern is very high up, making it difficult to lower an engine down.

THE TORQEEDO ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE - CLEAN POWER

The other real advantage of the Torqeedo outboard over its petrol driven outboard engine equivalents is its cleanliness. Just as the pioneers of electricity one hundred years ago knew, electricity is inherently clean.

Therefore your Torqeedo electric outboard engine can be stored in a car boot, caravan locker or your yacht's stern locker. This is without worrying about the Torqeedo leaking oil, or even worse, leaking petrol and inflammable fumes!

THE TORQEEDO'S POWER OUTPUT EXPLAINED

You will often see the Torqeedo electric outboard described as being the equivalent to either a 3hp or a 4hp outboard engine.
In practice it is both. Let us explain why to you. As the Torqeedo is an electric outboard, it delivers its power to the propeller in a radically different way to a how conventional petrol driven outboard engine delivers its trust.

There are very few transmission loses in a Torqeedo electric outboard. Also the Torqeedo outboard engine is designed to be "high torque" (hence its name), with a very good efficiency curve of engineered power delivery.
Therefore "like for like" when compared with a normal outboard engine the comparable trust on the Torqeedo outboard engine is at 4hp. After all, it is the trust which pushes your boat along.

However the Torqeedo outboard's efficiency makes it the same nominal power rating as a conventional 3hp petrol outboard engine.

The Torqeedo outboard's propeller spins far more slowly than the equivalent propeller on petrol outboard - typically the propeller revolutions will only be spinning about a third as fast as a normal outboard.

This is because the Torqeedo outboard delivers its thrust via a high torque electric engine, thus the twin-bladed propeller only needs to spin slowly at the base of the outboard shaft.

In practical terms, during normal use a boat owner on a typical small boat or inflatable will think the Torqueedo electric outboard is the direct equivalent of normal 4hp petrol driven outboard engine unit.

THE RANGE OF THE TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003 OUTBOARD ENGINE

This is the first question that any knowledgeable and experienced boat owner will ask about a Torqeedo electric outboard engine. This politest of questions normally conceals an underlying serious concern about whether the range of an Torqeedo electric outboard will be adequate for normal boating use.

Let’s be honest here. A few years ago the range of a Torqeedo electric outboard was good. However even just a few years ago the Torqeedo outboard's range was just not quite good enough to match a conventional outboard from any of the major outboard engine manufacturers such as Yamaha, Suzuki or Mariner.

However recent improvements in Torqeedo's electric battery technology at the heart of the 2013 models means that you will be now be able to enjoy day-long expeditions with your new Torqeedo electric outboard in safety The gps linked readout will mean that you will know for sure that there is enough juice left in your Torqeedo's outboards' battery to get you home (see below).

At slow speed, up to 2 knots, over ten hours motoring is possible with a Torqeedo outboard engine before a recharge is needed, giving you a range of up to 20 miles. This is rather a long way. We have to say that 20 miles is a long way to go in a small boat, even with a silent Torqeedo electric outboard behind you!. It is quite a bit more range than you would get on a small petrol outboard engine without refuelling it.

At half throttle, up to 3 knots, over three and a half hours motoring is possible with a Torqeedo outboard engine before a recharge is needed, giving you a range of about 10 miles on a Torqeedo.

At full throttle, giving say a full 5 knots speed, only forty minutes motoring is possible with a Torqeedo electric outboard before a recharge is needed, giving you a range of up to 3 miles at full throttle.

As you have probably guessed yourself, we would recommend that the Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard engine is generally used at between half and two-thirds full wide open throttle.

The Torqeedo’s electric drive is a high efficiency unit - therefore the trust of a Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard engine is very good at these lower revolutions. There is no need to rev the Torqeedo outboard engine in the same way as a conventional outboard engine in order to get a good steady performance.

THE TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S - OUTBOARD ENGINES UNIQUE READOUT SYSTEM

The German designers of the Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard engine were being typically thorough and precise when they designed this electric outboard. Those crafty German’s anticipated you might be concerned about the remaining "safe range" of the Torqeedo battery.

Therefore every Torqeedo electric outboard has - built into the tiller handle - a nifty little GPS readout This shows you the remaining battery status and range left on your Torqeeedo. This Torqeedo GPS readout is instantaneous and very precise, adusting quickly as the throttle settings change.

This "status readout" feature gives you the key parameters of your Torqeedo outboard's remaining range, remaining battery charge (as a percentage), your speed over the ground and the input power. In addition to this readout, an audible alarm on the Torqeedo outboard engine will also sound when the battery is down to 30% of power remaining.

THE TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S ELECTRIC OUTBOARD ENGINE - SILENCE IS GOLDEN

Using a Torqeedo outboard engine for the first time out on the water is a revolution and revelation for all experienced boaters. This is for one reason and one reason only - it's completely and utterly silent!

All modern outboard engines are quite good for noise emissions, as they all have to be manufactured to comply with the latest EU noise emission rules. However the Torqeedo electric outboard is just in another class - it is THE most silent outboard engine. The boat’s hull is noisier than the electric engine when moving at speed.

When you use a Torqeedo outboard engine for the first time we almost guarantees it will result in the small boat's skipper getting a crinkled neck. This neck will come about as you will keep looking back and down to see whether your new Torqeedo electric outboard engine has stopped working!!!.

The Torqeedo outboard is so effortlessly quiet that your boat's own bow wave, birdsong and the "plop" of fish surfacing will be clearly audible when driving your Torqeedo powered boat along. Silent running is the best description of this experience - quite simply the Torqeedo transforms the boating experience of using a small boat with an outboard engine.

The Torqeedo outboard engine is therefore ideal for fishing, wildlife watching, or just watching the gorgeous scenery slip past in blissful silence.

THE TORQEEDO OUTBOARD ENGINES - NEW 2012 WATER-RESISTANT CASING

Back in early 2012, the German design engineers radically improved the design of the Torqeedo outboard's casing, so that it offered full IP67 rating (The IP rating is "Ingress Protection").

Therefore a Torqeedo outboard engine can be immersed in up to 1m of water with no ingress of water into the casing. We were very impressed by this new feature when it was first demonstrated to us. Please do not try your Torqeedo engine in the bath at home (whilst it is clean enough to go in the bath the power of the Torqeedo's propeller may cause splashes).

All Torqeedo's engines are now rated to IP67, allowing for immersion in shallow water without damage.

CHARGING YOUR 2013 TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S OUTBOARD ENGINE

The Torqeedo outboard engine comes with an fully integrated battery as part of the basic Torqeedo outboard engine package (as shown in the photos).

This Torqeedo battery can be fully charged (when new) in about 15 hours. The Torqeedo's sophisticated lithium-ion battery system can be charge from "dead" or "significantly discharged" with no adverse effects.

Spare Torqeedo batteries are available to be purchased as optional extras. However given the efficiency of the recent Torqeedo's battery design, in practice you are very unlikely to need to buy a spare Torqeedo battery. We at Pennine Marine actively discourage our new Torqeedo owners from buying an additional battery. In almost all cases the range of your standard Torqeedo outboard's main battery will be adequate for almost all your normal boating needs and uses.

Only if you need to refuel your engine “on the move” because of a long range will (we think) you will need a spare Torqeedo battery.

WHERE TO USE A TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S ELECTRIC OUTBOARD?

We at Pennine Marine know Torqeedo outboard engines are extremely useful for three main boating applications;

TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S AS THE CLEAN YACHT TENDER OUTBOARD ENGINE

On yacht tenders, where the Torqeedo's electric outboard engines lightweight, cleanliness and lack of inflammable fuel makes them ideal to stow anywhere on the yacht or motor cruiser.

The Torqeedo outboard's lightweight and cleanliness makes them incredibly easy to lift onto and off the tenders’ transom. Being the easily lightest outboard engine in their class - half the weight of a Suzuki DF4 - man-handling a Torqeedo outboard engine off or onto a yacht or motor cruiser onto a inflatable's boat's transom is just incredibly easy.

The lack of a flammable fuel is a major advantage for offshore yachts, where the storage of petrol in offshore yacht lockers can be prohibited by the marine authorities and yacht race organisers. Therefore the Torqeedo offers a way for the offshore yachties to have an outboard for their tender and not worry about the storage of flammable fuel.

TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S AS A SILENT OUTBOARD ENGINE FOR RIVER OR LAKES CRUISING

As a river and lake's cruiser, where the range and power of the latest Torqeedos outboards makes them ideal for cruising - be that on Lake Windermere, or on Lake Garda, whichever takes your fancy.

Here the silent running of the Torqeedo outboard engine means that you will not be disturbing the local population -human, marine and wildlife. The silent running of the Torqeedo electric outboard allows you to sneak up on the local fish and wildlife - and then photograph the look on their startled faces!!

The Torqeedo outboard engine is thus ideal for fishermen on Britain's river's or lake's. The Torqeedo can be used as a simple trolling motor when fishing.

TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S OUTBOARD- INCREDIBLE PORTABILITY FOR CAR AND CARAVAN USERS

With all outboard engines that are transported to and from your boat in the back of a car or inside a caravan, there are always the two key issues of weight and oil.

We all know that outboards are heavy to lift. Even the best Japanese made outboard engine brands such as Suzuki are not ultra-lightweight (and we should know - we sell lots of these Yamaha and Suzuki outboards!). Also all conventional outboards have oil and fuel that needs to be kept inside the engine.

However the Torqeedo's Travel 1003's outboard engine makes them unique design and electric propulsion system means that it is incredibly light to lift.

Also the Torqeedo outboard has no oils, fuel and lubricants to leak, thus making the Torqueedo outboard both clean and delightfully odour free when stowed in the car or caravan!
Whether used as either a tender's engine, or left on a cruising boat, the Torqeedo electric outboard can quickly be removed from the tender for security and carried into a car, thus mitigating the risk of theft.

The lightweight and lack of oils and fuels in the Torqeedo electric outboard makes it the class leader for being a clean and environmentally friendly outboard engine. It is extremely clean and this makes it the most transportable outboard engine. The Torqeedo sells well to those customers who value the cleanliness and lack of smells.

TORQEEDO TRAVEL 1003S OUTBOARD - THE REAL FINANCIAL EQUATION

It has to be said that, being at the cutting edge of silent electric outboard engine technology, means the 2013 Torqeedo outboard is not a cheap outboard engine to buy new. The Torqeedo electric engines that Pennine Marine sells here in Skipton are a premium product and this is reflected in our pricing of Torqeedo outboard engines.

However the Torqeedo outboard engine's numerous advantages over other conventional outboard engine's means it has a growing niche of popular devotees within the UK outboard engine market, especially in Yorkshire and the Lake District.

However before you throw your hands up in horror at the purchase price, we ask that you think about it a bit more before you simply dismiss the Torqeedo on cost grounds

Also ask yourself why Pennine Marine sell so many Torqeedo’s up here in Yorkshire…….?????? We are from Yorkshire and therefore we have a reputation “Up North” of knowing the true value of things.

One of our customers Mark is a true Yorkshire man (with extra Scottish blood in him). Mark is a maths teacher at a posh public school (the school he teaches at is so posh it is heated by gas, rather than coal). When he looked at the Torqeedo Travel 1003 outboard last year, he pointed out the following mathematical equation to us.

The Torqeedo is expensive to buy as a first purchase. However being electric it requires no expenditure on fuel to use it (as it charges off the mains). Therefore the electricity bill for a recharging a Torqeedo is literally pennies. Secondly the Torqeedo requires no oils or greases. Thirdly there is no annual servicing bill, so there will be no servicing expenditure at our Skipton workshop.

Mark then got out ALL his boating receipts (as I said, he has Scottish blood), including our puny annual servicing bills for his own old 4hp engine (which every year he argues is too expensive, but that a different story…...).

Mark then worked out something that only maths teachers are capable of doing – the Torqeedo’s financial payback period.
A few pushes of the math’s teacher’s supercomputer calculator showed for him, as a typical leisure small boat owner, there was a payback period of just under three years.

The initial high cost of purchasing the Torqeedo Travel 1003 was being offset by considerable savings on running and servicing costs. Therefore in the fourth year the Torqeedo was effectively free to use and saving Mark money.

So there you are then – Mark brought a Torqeedo engine we had on sale here. Our workshop manager Steve won’t be seeing him again anytime soon and in the future they won’t be talking over a cup of tea about the outboard servicing bill- because there will not be one.

And now you know why we sell so many Torqeedo’s up here in Yorkshire. All our customers are as well-educated on financial matters as Mark is. (Just a shame more of them don’t work in the City of London. Then again, how many Yorkshiremen want to work in a City office and only go boating in the Solent at the weekend?).

P.S. I forgot to tell Mark that he forgot to add into his financial equation the cost of driving over to see us to drop off his outboard for servicing. Please don't say I said anything about him forgetting this will you. He's a good customer!
